If you have never seen a chiropractor before, it is normal to wonder what happens at the first appointment, especially after a car accident. You may be in pain, dealing with insurance calls and trying to get your car fixed at the same time. Here is how a first visit works at Heal 360 Rehab in Arlington, TX, so you know what to expect before you walk in.

What to bring

  • Your auto insurance information and claim number, if you have one.

  • The police report or crash report number.

  • Your attorney's contact information, if you have hired one.

  • A list of current medications and any records from the ER, urgent care, or your primary care doctor.

  • Comfortable clothing that lets you move freely.

If you went to the emergency room or urgent care first, bring any discharge paperwork or imaging reports. Not sure whether to start with urgent care or a chiropractor? Our article on chiropractor vs. urgent care after a car accident can help.

Before your appointment

A little preparation makes the first visit more useful:

  • Write down your symptoms and roughly when each one started, including anything that showed up a day or two after the crash.

  • Note what makes the pain better or worse, such as turning your head, sitting, driving or sleeping on one side.

  • List what you've already tried, like ice, heat, rest or over-the-counter medication, and whether it helped.

  • Arrive a little early so there's time to finish paperwork without feeling rushed.

If your pain gets significantly worse before your appointment, or you develop emergency warning signs like a severe headache, confusion or loss of strength, go to the emergency room instead of waiting.

Intake and health history

You will complete new patient and accident intake forms describing how the crash happened, where you were seated, the direction of impact, and every symptom you have noticed since. This history matters because many car accident injuries are connected, for example neck strain that triggers headaches or a back injury that sends pain into the leg.

Be specific, and include symptoms that seem minor. A slight headache or tingling in the fingers can be an important clue, and symptoms that started a few days after the crash still count. Our guide to delayed whiplash symptoms explains why many symptoms show up late.

The examination

Dr. Don Ringer, D.C. performs a hands-on exam that typically includes posture and range of motion testing, orthopedic and neurological tests, and palpation of the spine and soft tissues. If findings suggest a fracture, a significant disc injury, or a concussion that needs medical management, you will be referred for imaging or to the right specialist.

The exam is meant to answer three questions: what was injured, how much it is affecting you, and whether chiropractic care is appropriate or another provider should see you first.

Your treatment plan

Based on the exam, you receive a written plan with goals and a visit schedule. Car accident plans often combine chiropractic adjustments with StemWave therapy, trigger point and myofascial therapy, and guided rehabilitation exercise. Treatment often begins on the first visit when it is safe to do so.

Your plan is built around your injuries. Common car accident injuries we treat include whiplash, neck pain, back pain and sciatica, shoulder pain and headaches.

What happens at follow-up visits

Follow-up visits usually focus on treatment and on tracking your progress. Dr. Ringer will ask how you've been feeling, recheck the areas that were injured, and adjust your care as you improve. Over time, care typically shifts from calming pain and inflammation toward restoring motion and rebuilding strength so the injured area is better supported. Your plan is reviewed along the way, so it changes as your symptoms change.

Injuries we commonly see at a first visit after a crash

Every accident is different, but a few patterns come up often at first visits:

  • Neck strain and whiplash from the head moving forward and back quickly, especially in rear-end collisions.

  • Mid and lower back pain from the body being thrown against the seatbelt or twisting during impact.

  • Shoulder pain from seatbelt forces, bracing on the steering wheel or the shoulder hitting the door.

  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull, often tied to neck muscle tightness.

  • Arm or leg tingling that can point to nerve irritation and needs careful evaluation.

Knowing these patterns helps us ask the right questions, but your exam is what guides your care.

How long does recovery take?

There's no single answer. Recovery depends on how the accident happened, which tissues were injured, your health before the crash, how soon you started care, and how consistently you follow your plan. Some patients feel better within a few weeks; others need longer. Dr. Ringer will give you a sense of expected progress after your exam and update it as you improve, rather than promising a timeline up front.

Questions to ask at your first visit

It's your care, so ask anything you want to understand. Patients often ask:

  • What do you think was injured, and why?

  • What does the treatment plan include, and what is each part for?

  • What should I avoid at home or at work while I heal?

  • What symptoms should make me call the office or go to the ER?

  • How will my visits be billed to PIP, health insurance or my attorney?

Documentation for insurance and attorneys

Every visit is documented, including your symptoms, exam findings, and progress. We accept PIP and letters of protection and send records to your attorney when you authorize it, so the paperwork side of your recovery is handled.
